Bear Divide Field Trip
Apr

5:30 AM05:30

Bear Divide Field Trip

Bear Divide is a low, narrow, pass or saddle within the San Gabriel Mountains just above Soledad Canyon. It is home to amazing morning flights of migrating birds in the spring from March through May with the height of migration usually towards the end of April. Thousands of migrating birds have been known to funnel over the narrow divide daily, sometimes so close an observer feels the need to duck or dodge.

The Moore Lab of Zoology at Occidental College runs a regular count to quantify the numbers and identities of birds migrating through Bear Divide. As this is on public lands, the public is welcome to watch and participate. By 9 or 10 AM, the show is usually over. Clear days after a storm front are best, fog or winds in the wrong direction tend to shut migration down though.

Our field trip is timed to hopefully experience spectacle at the height of north bound migration.

Meet: We will convene in the parking lot of the Whittier Community Center and carpool/caravan, leaving at 5:30 AM sharp.

We should be back in Whittier by 12:00 noon.

Bring: Be prepared for anything. Cold, wind, rain, heat. No need for a lunch as we will be done before then.

San Jacinto Field Trip

San Jacinto Field Trip

This is, perhaps, the best place to see just about every kind of raptor there is for Southern California.  Last year, a juvenile gyrfalcon had been seen making an early morning appearance starting in early January. Rough-legged Hawks, Kestrels, Harriers and Red-tails are everywhere. It seems like there is usually at least one of each duck and a fair bit of peeps. There will be plenty of birds.

IMPORTANT: Everyone entering the wildlife area is required to be in possession of a CDFW Lands Pass.  A one-day pass can be purchased for $5.66 ($32.14 for annual pass) on the CDFW website - need to enter the location and date of visit.

We will be doing some driving and stopping.

Meet: We will convene in the parking lot of the Whittier Community Center and carpool/caravan, leaving at 7:00 AM sharp.

We should be back in Whittier between 4:00 and 5:00.

Bring: I recommend that everybody bring some folding chairs. As long as the weather cooperates, a clear sunny day is about all that is required. A sandwich, Coke and a folding chair are about as close to heaven as one gets in the Inland Empire.

San Diego Overnighter Field Trip

to Feb 18

San Diego Overnighter Field Trip

Make your reservations as soon as possible! Our home base will be the Comfort Inn Sea World Area motel at 3880 Greenwood St., San Diego. You can stay there or elsewhere, and we’ll be leaving from there at 7:30 AM for the day’s birding. Please RSVP!

We will work our way down the Point Loma peninsula, stopping at the Fort Rosecrans Cemetery, then down the Cabrillo National Monument and the famous “Drip”. This area is quite the migrant stop over.  Just about anything is possible. When done, we will work our way back up the peninsula, stopping at Famosa Slough, then on to the Tijuana Estuary.  There have been sightings of Little Blue Herons, Yellow-crowned Night Herons and Reddish Egrets there. Time permitting, we will try some of the fields in the Hollister-Dairy Mart-Monument Road area.

We will return to the Comfort Inn Sea World Area motel for the traditional wine and cheese party and re-hydration event.

Sunday, we will probably hit La Jolla Cliff early (before the traffic) looking for oystercatchers and the like, then on to Mission Trails Regional Park. Mission Trails Regional Park is a chaparral type park, but with a fair bit of water. This stop may change depending on the water supply. I will know more after my scouting run.

I typically make a scouting run the weekend before a scheduled trip. I will therefore submit an updated email on the following Monday or Tuesday evening. Please check our website for a general outline of how our San Diego weekend will probably progress.

Meet: We will convene at 6:50 AM Saturday at the Comfort Inn Sea World Area, at 3880 Greenwood St., San Diego. Please make arrangements so that we have at least four people in each car. Some of the places that we need to pull over at are well-traveled.

Bring: Figure on two sack lunches, the usual bird watching stuff and some sun screen.  As with all of our wine and cheese parties, creativity is in order.  Scopes will be a definite plus.

Trip Leader: Jay Oberholtzer

IMPORTANT RSVP: Either by email at tvulture@earthlink.net or telephone my office at 562-945-2838.

Angeles National Forest Field Trip

This Saturday's field trip will be to the San Gabriel Mountains.  Unfortunately, most of the Angeles Crest Highway is closed due to winter storm damage so our options are limited.   We will be going to Mount Wilson with a couple of stops on the way.

We will be leaving the Whittier Community Center parking lot at 7:00 AM, arriving at the Red Box trail head parking area just before 8:00 AM.  Since there are very few trails trail heads that are reachable by auto, the parking area is likely to be pretty full so we should car pool as much as possible.

We will bird the area and use the available restroom facilities and then move on towards Mt. Wilson, stopping at the Eaton Saddle trailhead.  We will walk down that trail a bit (often good for Canyon Wren) before we make it to Mt. Wilson around 10:00 AM when the gates open.

IMPORTANT: Drivers will need an Adventure Pass or America the Beautiful Pass to park and use amenities where we will be stopping.  Adventure Passes are $30 for the year and $5 for the day.  The most reliable and easy place to purchase an Adventure Pass are the Big 5 Sporting Goods stores - check the Angeles National Forest website for other locations.

Big Morongo Field Trip

OUR MAY FIELD TRIP WILL BE TO BIG MORONGO CANYON PRESERVE, which is located north of Palm Springs. Big Morongo is a great place for migrant flycatchers and warblers as well as interesting local residents. Great looks a Vermillion Flycatchers are almost guaranteed. Strolling through the tree shaded boardwalk is reason enough to go there. It can get hot, so be prepared for warm weather. Bring you usual birding stuff along with water, junk food, a lunch, a hat, and sunscreen. We will bird Big Morongo and Covington Park and have lunch in the park.

Meet: We will convene in the parking lot of the Whittier Community Center and carpool/caravan, leaving at 7:00 AM sharp. It’s close to a 2-hour drive, so we must leave promptly at 7:00.

Update: Possible destination change to San Jacinto (Riverside County) Field Trip

Update: Possible destination change to San Jacinto (Riverside County) Field Trip

Update for March 18, 2023 Field Trip:

With all of the  rain we have had, and the forecast of more rain for this coming week, we may not be able to go to the San Jacinto Wildlife Refuge.  The roads throughout the Refuge are dirt and prone to being muddy.

The alternate plan will be to go to the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Preserve.  This is a fairly extensive network of trails through a tidal basin that ends at Seaside State Beach.  The drive is nearly 1 ½ to 2 hours, but no dirt roads.  If we go there, we won’t need to bring any folding chairs.

This rainy weather situation  will cause some last minute decisions to be made.  Please let me know by email if you are thinking of going this coming Saturday.  In any case, we will leave the parking lot at the Whittier Community Center at 7:00 am this coming Saturday, March  18, 2023. Whether we go the San Jacinto Wildlife Refuge or San Elijo Lagoon will depend on how wet this coming week winds up being.

Jay Oberholtzer

Original plan:

This is, perhaps, the best place to see just about every kind of raptor there is for Southern California. Rough-legged Hawks, Kestrels, Harriers and Red-tails are everywhere. It seems like there is usually at least one of each duck and a fair bit of peeps. There will be plenty of birds.

We will probably spend our whole time at the San Jacinto wildlife refuge. We will be doing some driving and stopping. The little 22 Channel radios are very handy to have. There are no picnic tables or the like, anywhere in the refuge. There are plenty of places to pull over. I recommend that everybody bring some folding chairs. As long as the weather cooperates, a clear sunny day is about all that is required. A sandwich, Coke and a folding chair are about as close to heaven as one gets in the Inland Empire. Bring your birding stuff, junk food and a lunch. Folding chairs will bring a touch of civilization.

Meet: We will leave from the Whittier Community Center at 7:00 a.m.

Bring: A sandwich, Coke and a folding chair are about as close to heaven as one gets in the Inland Empire. Bring your birding stuff, junk food and a lunch.

TRIP IS FULL - Salton Sea Weekender Field Trip

THIS FIELD TRIP IS FULL

Please be prepared to carpool. Many of the roads we will be birding on are dirt farm roads with very limited parking. If we end up with a lot of cars I will be forced to skip some stops to due limited parking space. The roads will be relatively dry but there will be a few wet/muddy areas. Two wheel drive will be fine.

We are going to the Salton Sea! This is a great wintering spot for just about every bird there is. Between flooded fields, a huge, foul-smelling body of water, acres of disgusting mud, all surrounded by a desert hell-hole, anyone can see that it is a great place for birds. This area in winter is great for raptors, shore birds and all kinds of migrants. It is just south enough that all kinds of rarities show up. Because the ecology is so varied, we can expect to see a lot of species.

We will caravan through a bunch of places, stopping for lunch when the time is right. We will definitely have our traditional wine and cheese party, so bring something for that. We will try for a spot where we can watch the Sandhill Cranes come in to roost. Sunday, we will leave at the same time and bird our way in the general direction of home.

Make your reservations soon at the Brawley Townhouse Inn & Suites, 135 Main Street in Brawley, 855-797-6733. Another possibility is the Brawley Inn, 575 Main Street in Brawley, 888-388-0139.

Itinerary

Saturday: Meet at 6:30 a.m. in Brawley at the Brawley Townhouse Inn & Suites. Bring your lunch, water, and anything else you need during the day. WE WILL DEPARTING PROMPTLY AT 7AM ON SATURDAY MORNING AT THE TOWNHOUSE INN AND SUITES. PLEASE ARRIVE A HALF HOUR EARLY FOR ORIENTATION, CARPOOLING DISCUSSIONS ETC.

The first restroom stop will be at about 10;30 or 11 so drink coffee with that in mind.

We will be back to the Townhouse Inn between 2:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Be ready to depart at 4:00 p.m. for our wine and cheese party, “Booze on the Berm” where we watch the spectacle of cranes, geese, ducks, gulls, and egrets come in to roost. Please bring the beverage of your choice, chairs, and a hors d’oeuvre to share.

Dinner will be your choice after the wine and cheese. Many of us will be having dinner at Las Chabelas Mexican Restaurant, 749 S, Brawley Ave.

Sunday: Meet at 7:00 a.m. for a morning of more birding. We will not be coming back to Brawley, so be sure to have your belongings and check out Sunday morning.

You will need to bring a lunch on Sunday as well. We will be birding up Highway 111 on the east shore of the sea. Stops will include locations within the Salton Sea State Recreation Area. There is a $7 charge per vehicle. The last stop will be at the recreation area headquarters for lunch. The trip officially ends there but you are of course free to depart whenever you choose.

Bring: Bring a food for the weekend including sack lunches, sufficient junk food to last the trip, your usual birdwatching stuff, scope if you have one.

This area in winter is great for raptors, shore birds and all kinds of migrants. It is just south enough that all kinds of rarities show up. Because the ecology is so varied, we can expect to see a lot of species. Some of the roads will be unpaved, but should be fine for passenger cars with average clearance. It is probably best to leave the Ferrari at home.

The Madrona Marsh Preserve is a mix of several micro-habitats including back dune, coastal prairie, alkali margin, vernal pool and vernal marsh area and is situated within the greater El Segundo Sand Dune System. The fine sand particles of this ancient dune system have been carried from the coastal dunes by winds for thousands of years. Each of the Preserve's habitats houses its own specifically adapted native plant species.

The Preserve provides a valuable habitat for birds, insects, spiders, frogs, reptiles and small mammals. It is one of the last vestiges of the extensive marshland that once covered the Southern California Coastal Plain.

The map of Irvine Regional Park can be found online here: https://www.irvineparkrailroad.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Irvine_Regional_Map.pdf

Entry fee for park is $3.00 Monday - Friday

Expect good warm weather but consider bringing a light sweater / jacket in event it gets windy. Bring water, a hat, lightweight flashlight and wear long sleeves / pants to avoid the bugs.

Directions:

  • From Interstate 5 south, take Jamboree North (left turn at end of off-ramp). Stay on Jamboree and it dead ends into park.

  • As you pay the kiosk attendant, ask for a map to the park, maps are free to all visitors

  • At first opportunity after the entrance kiosk, turn left and park in Lot A

Plans for the evening:

  • Lot A borders Sycamore Hill where Lark Sparrows, Chipping Sparrows, Sapsuckers, and Pine Siskins are sometimes found. If people are late we may bird this area a short time (15-20 minutes) to wait for late arrivals

  • Drive to Lot D and park. We will look for the Lewis's Woodpecker that has been reported here frequently, and recently in the Sycamores near the stables. This beautiful red-faced, pink bellied bird is often seen chasing off Acorn Woodpecker & Lesser Goldfinch.

  • Next we drive to Lot T where we may see Barn Owls, Great Horned Owls and can hear a captive Western Screech Owl's bouncing ball behind zoo fence. There is GHOW nest very near here that with three Owletts that have not yet pledged.

  • Lot P is next stop. We walk from there East and North along the closed road and look east near sunset where Lesser Nighthawks have been seen recently. The nighthawks are usually found flying into park from across the visible 241 toll road bridge and then fly along the hillside ridges. I photographed a few birds last year but is easier to see in the bins than to get a usable photo.

  • From Lot T to Lot P we can sometimes hear Common Poorwill and California Quail from the dry creek.

Overnighter to Monterey / Elkhorn Slough

to Apr 24

Overnighter to Monterey / Elkhorn Slough

This trip will be a unique adventure for most of us. We will start on Saturday at various spots in the general area of the Elkhorn Slough. This will cover a wide range of habitats. There is the possibility of a short docent-led tour on Saturday morning in the Elkhorn Slough national wildlife refuge. If that docent led tour is going to work out, I need to know how many people will attend. Therefore it is important that you let me know, as soon as possible, if you plan on attending. This information will also become important for our Sunday pelagic tour.

There is more than a full day’s supply of stops in the Elkhorn Slough area, alone. Additional time permitting, we will try for the Point Lobos area as well. Where the Slough meets the Monterey Bay, there are strong possibilities of sea otters, loons as well as a large supply of assorted shorebirds. Just about everything that one would expect in grasslands, tide pools and riparian habitat seem to be reported in the area of the Slough.

Sunday is scheduled for a pelagic tour in Monterey Bay. The cost of that trip is $150. The space has to be reserved. I have secured reservations for 10. I understand that I can increase or decrease these reservations as needed, but eventually will have to pay the fee. Therefore, if you want to attend the pelagic tour, please let me know right away and I will generate a list of those who are attending. The trip is expected to last about eight hours. Because this is their whale watching season and not their birdwatching season, they made it very clear that if they see a pod of killer whales they are going to go charging off watching them. However they have continued to report all kinds of unusual bird sightings on their trips, regardless of whether the target is whales or seabirds. They reported a short tailed albatross siding for yesterday. The website for this place has several addresses. One is gowhales.com.  The other is Montereyseabirds.com. Please let me know, right away, if you want to attend this pelagic trip.

Places to stay in this area range from obscenely expensive in the Monterey area to downright economical, the farther away you get from Monterey. I have a favorite place to stay whenever I’m in Monterey. It is called the Spindrift Inn. It is a highly expensive hotel, especially when compared to our usual “Audubon” lodgings. I have located from an Internet search the following places which are far more reasonable: they are:

Sand Dollar Inn in Seaside  $99/night

Sand Castle Inn in Seaside, $139/might

Seaside Inn in Seaside $88/night

Motel 6 Monterey $89/night

Super 8 by Wyndham Monterey $98/night

As they say, “choose wisely”.

I will designate the Saturday morning meeting place after I have an idea where others are staying and when I have confirmed where we will start out Saturday morning.  Please let me know if you are even just thinking about attending this trip, so I can provide updates by email.

I have a favorite bar at the Monterey Plaza Hotel.  It is outdoors and situated over the Bay.  There is a great panoramic view of the Monterey Bay, Kelp Beds, Sea Otters and seabirds.  We will have our traditional “Wine and Cheese” refreshment gathering somewhere on Saturday evening.  I am not sure where yet.

Please let me know if you are even just thinking about going.  I need to make sure that the reservations for the Sunday Pelagic trip are locked in and I need to let the Elkhorn Slough people know as well.  I will do my usual scouting run the weekend before and will almost certainly have updates when I get back.

Overnighter to Anza Borrego

GET YOUR ROOMS RESERVED NOW.  The place seems to be filling up fast.  There are lots of motels in Borrego Springs.  Many of us stay at Stanlunds Resort Inn & Suites, 2771 Borrego Springs Road, Borrego Springs, 92004 760-767-5501. We will probably meet there each morning.  Watch this website for times.

Anza Borrego State Park is a huge place.  If we hit the Spring migration right, there are lots of desert oddities.  One of our major goals is to catch sight of the Swainson's Hawks as they migrate through. They come in to feed on the bugs that happen during the Spring bloom.  The weather is the big variable.  If we guessed right, the place will be covered in desert blooms. If not, it can be a "little warm" (Ok.  More like a desert hell hole)  Over the years, I have been treated to Mountain Quail and Long Eared Owls.  At this point in the season, it is too hard to predict.  Plan on arriving Friday evening.  We will start bright and early Saturday morning.  Bring water, sack lunches for Saturday and Sunday and your bird watching stuff.  Some of the places we will go to will be on dirt roads.  The condition of those roads really depends on the winter weather.  We will probably cram into SUV's for the Saturday places.

Madrona Marsh Field Trip

To carpool: Meet at Whittier Community Center at 7:30am

Bolsa Chica Field Trip

We will convene in the parking lot of the Whittier Community Center and carpool/caravan, leaving at 7:00 AM sharp. If you would rather meet at Bolsa Chica, plan to rendezvous in the PCH parking lot at 8:00.

Bolsa Chica is one of the great local birding spots. Ducks, shorebirds, and waders can be found in abundance. Gulls, terns, and pelicans are regular, as are raptors that nest on the bluffs.  Bring water, a lunch, a hat, and sunscreen. We will bird Bolsa Chica and possibly nearby spots like Central Park or Harriett Wieder Park.

Bulmer Memorial Bird Walk

Steve Huber, our Chapter’s President, will lead our yearly Bulmer Bird Walk through Whittier Narrow’s Legg Lake.

This tradition began with an invitation to a local journalist, the late Bill Bell, from his neighbor, the late Thelma Bulmer, a past chapter president, as a way to show our city that yes, indeed, Whittier has wild birds. Let’s see who is in town for the winter!

This year the walk will take place at Legg Lake at Whittier Narrows Recreation Center. Meet at the parking lot on Santa Anita, just south of the Pomona Freeway.
